If you are writing a bibliographic essay, court document, or other document that requires a full citation in the text of the document, set the Intext citation style to Short Form, and then select the publishing style for the citations.

For a bibliographic essay using Chicago style citations, for instance, you would set the options in the Generate Citations dialog as illustrated here:

The selection of Short Form Intext citations automatically generates a reference list. If you do not require a reference list for your document, delete the reference list after you have written the citations.
